Thanks for choosing Clearent and PAX to safely and securely accept payments.
The PAX A80 and A920 smart terminals are Android-based devices that deliver the highest payment security in a sleek, modern design. The PAX A80, the most cost-effective device in the A Series, is a powerful, game-changing countertop device. The A920 combines the full features of an Android tablet with a powerful mobile payment terminal, all in a sleek and compact design.
Make sure you have batched out the existing or old terminal. Once batched, disconnect the old terminal.
If it hasn’t been already, connect the terminal to power by plugging the power cord and adapter into the port on the back of the device labeled “Power”. The power button is located on the front of the device and shares the red cancel button. Hold the power button down for 3-5 seconds then release to turn it on. Once on, the terminal will boot to a generic home screen.
Note: The terminal does not boot right into a payment app. That is selected in a future step.
Next, determine the best mode of communication to the Internet. The PAX A80 has 3 different communication methods: Ethernet, Wi-Fi connection and Wi-Fi to DSL line or cable connection. The PAX A920 has 2 communication methods: 4G LTE and WiFi.
About the Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi cannot be configured in the file build for the PAX A Series terminals. It must be done on the face of the device itself.
Plug the connected Ethernet cable into the LAN port on the back of the device. From the Settings menu, select Ethernet and swipe the tab to enable it.
Choose the ETHERNET OPTION to set the Ethernet setup.
Turn the ETHERNET OPTION ON.
Tip: For Wi-Fi connection, have your Wi-Fi network password ready.
Available access types are DHCP (IP networks), Static, and Manual Proxy. The following instructions include the set up for each of these communication types.
TIP – For Wi-Fi connection, have your Wi-Fi network password ready.

Choose the Wi-Fi OPTION to set the Wi-Fi setup.
Wi-Fi to DSL Line or Cable Connection
Select the payment app from the home screen of the device. It will either be displayed as “Broadpos Clearent” or “TSYS Sierra”. Once the app is selected it will launch into the payment home menu.
Next, test your device by running a sale, return and batch report. Specific instructions on this process can be found in the PAX A80 QRG.
If you are a Clearent sales representative or partner, you can reprogram an A Series device if you wish to perform a same-day install for a new merchant. These steps are for terminals being used as a stand-alone device.
Click the PAXSTORE icon in the top right of the screen.
Click on the circle/arrow icon in the top right.
Make sure “Initialization” is chosen.
In the TID field, enter the Terminal Configuration Number (TCN) which can be found in the top left corner of the VAR sheet.
Click “Next.”
Click the Initialization button.
From the device’s Settings menu, edit each setting to best suit the needs of the business.
Here are some we recommend.
If you are in the payment application, choose the circle at the bottom to return to the home menu.
Once on the Android home screen choose the option for SETTINGS.
The settings password is 9876 or in some cases 9876@@. Once that is keyed into the terminal press OK on the terminal screen. The green keypad button will not work on this screen.
Once in the settings menu you can use your finger to scroll down to reach the settings you want to configure.
Choose the PASSWORD setting to update the password. Default password is 9876 or in some cases 9876@@, but it is recommended that you change the password and keep it in a secure place.
If you turn this option OFF it will disable the password for the terminal/Android settings. Choose MODIFY PASSWORD option to change the terminal/Android setting password.
Enter the original password and then the new password you wish to set twice. Once entered press the OK button to complete update.
Choose the SOUND & NOTIFICATION setting to update the volume and keypad beeps.
This setting controls the NOTIFICATION VOLUME. Notifications can consist of application updates made to the payment app, and other app pushes made to the terminal. To turn off the keypad beeps flag the KEY TONE OPTION OFF.
Choose the option for DATE & TIME to access the date and time settings menu.
The terminal comes with the time zone set to Eastern time and military time.
Flag off automatic time zone setting and then choose the SELECT TIME ZONE setting option to configure the merchant’s time zone.
Use your finger to scroll to find the merchant’s time zone and choose the option for the appropriate time zone.
Choose the FUNCTION OPTION in the payment app.
Choose the REPORTS option in the function menu of the payment app.
Enter the password and press either the ENTER key on the screen OR the green button on the terminal keypad. The default password is the day’s date in mmddyyyy format.
To print the report that is set as the default report (set in the parameters of the file build) choose DEFAULT REPORT. To set customized filters for the report choose CURRENT REPORT.
Choose the REPORT TYPE and how you want the transactions on the report to be SORTED.
Once the report type is chosen with the appropriate filters, choose the option for PRINT.
To set this as the new Default report press OK. If you do not want this set as the default report and only wish to print, press the CANCEL option.
Choose the FUNCTION option in the payment app.
Choose the OPERATOR option in the function menu of the payment app.
Enter in the password and press either the ENTER key on the screen OR the green button on the terminal keypad. The default password is the day’s date in mmddyyyy format.
Press the option for ADD OPERATOR.
Enter in the Operator Name (optional) and the Operator ID (required). Press the CONFIRM option on the screen.
Press the OK option on the screen.
Either enter in another Operator ID OR press the BACK arrow to return to the previous screen.
To go back to the function menu in the payment app press the back arrow. To view the operators choose the option for QUERY OPERATOR. To delete an operator choose the option for DELETE OPERATOR.
If all goes well, you should be set up now. If problems persist, check out other resources available in the step below.
